Reverse proxy routes you can read, test and roll back

Segment Route 2.9.26 is a Windows 10/11 agent that edits your route files, runs your own test and request commands, and shows every real result in a chat card for you to review.

Routing basics

What a reverse proxy does for your servers

A reverse proxy is a server in front of your backends that gives several sites or services one public address and sends each request to the right place. Rules are plain text. Segment Route edits those rules, runs your own test commands and shows the real status codes, and version 2.9.26 does it on Windows 10/11.

01

Find and fix a proxy loop

A loop starts when the proxy and the application both redirect http to https, so the browser bounces between them. Debugging a loop on your reverse proxy server begins with reading both rules. grep lists every line that contains the word redirect, read_file opens the files that matched, and copy_file saves a backup of the proxy file first. Backup done. In Ask first mode edit_file then shows a diff that removes the duplicate rule, and you accept or reject it. Shell runs your config test command and a request command, and the cards show a passing exit code and a single 301 hop instead of a chain.

Tool trace
grep redirect → 2 matches
read_file proxy.conf → loaded
edit_file proxy.conf → +1 -1
Shell your config test → exit 0
02

Add a route to your api gateway

A gateway is the single entry point in front of your API services, so every new service needs a new route. Whether you run an open source api gateway or a smaller routing layer, the routes usually sit in plain text files. glob finds the route files, with 3 matches in this example, read_file shows the rules, and edit_file adds one line that sends /orders to the orders service, with a diff first. Shell then runs your config test and reload commands. Check twice. If a dashboard cannot reach the reverse proxy afterwards, http_get fetches a page of your own service so you can read its status code.

Tool trace
glob routes/*.conf → 3 matches
read_file routes/api.conf → loaded
edit_file routes/api.conf → +1 -0
Shell your reload command → exit 0
03

End HTTPS at the proxy

When the proxy ends the encrypted connection and passes plain requests to the backends, it works as an ssl proxy. The certificate path then lives in one place. grep finds the line that names the certificate file, and after a renewal edit_file points that line at the new file and shows the diff for your approval. Shell runs your config test command, reloads, and sends a request over https, so you read the status code and the Location header yourself. The path moves once. Compare both with the 301 you noted before the change.

04

Send removed pages to a new page

A removed page should lead visitors to a page that really replaces it. For 404 error handling, redirection to a close match helps only when the new page covers the same topic, because a redirect must never show search engines and visitors different content. edit_file adds a permanent redirect with the code 301 while you watch the diff, and Shell requests the old address with your request command. A correct rule returns 301 and the new address. Backups matter. Rollback is one step: restore the backup and test again.

How it differs from a typical chat assistant

Segment Route 2.9.26 acts. A typical chat assistant describes a change in text, while this agent edits the file, runs your commands and attaches the real output to a card that you can expand.

How to get started

  1. Download the setup program, about 34 MB, and compare its SHA-256 checksum with the published manifest.
  2. Run the installer on Windows 10 or 11. No account is needed to run the app.
  3. Connect a model, then choose the working folder that holds your route files.
  4. Describe the task in the chat, choose Ask first or Plan only, and read each card as it appears.

Who uses it and when

Beginners who put their first site behind a proxy get the most from a visible workflow. Every step is a card. Reading the command, the output and the diff shows what a route or a redirect really changes, and Plan only lets you read the whole plan before anything runs.

Administrators who already know the syntax use it for repetitive edits. Typing is the boring part. A change that touches many files still ends with one test command, and Shell reports the real exit code, so you spend your attention on the diff and on the status codes.

People who manage a server over SSH can point the agent at that environment, where Shell commands run on the server. Scope is yours. Version 2.9.26 has an interface in 13 languages, and you keep the work to servers and domains that you own or administer, because the agent does not enforce that for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a reverse proxy?

It is a server that sits in front of one or more backend servers and forwards each request to the right one. Clients see only the proxy. It gives several sites or services one public address, can route by host name or path, ends HTTPS, spreads load and keeps backends off the public internet.

Is coderouting.com the official Segment Route website?

Yes, coderouting.com is the official Segment Route website, and its download button gives the original setup program, about 34 MB. Compare the checksum first. Check its SHA-256 value against the published manifest before you run it, and use the Send feedback button inside the app to report a problem.

How is an api gateway different from a reverse proxy server?

A gateway is a single entry point in front of API services, and besides routing requests it often checks credentials, limits request rates, logs requests and changes headers. A plain proxy mainly forwards traffic. Different jobs. Neither removes the need for authentication inside each service, and the agent edits the route files for either one.

What is an ssl proxy?

It is a proxy that handles the HTTPS part of each connection. SSL is TLS's old name. The proxy ends the encrypted connection from the client and then passes the request to a backend, so the certificate is managed in one place instead of on every backend server.

How does the agent change a route file?

The tool edit_file changes a file and shows a diff first. You decide. In Ask first mode the agent pauses before the change, you accept or reject it, and Shell then runs your config test command.

Do my files leave the PC?

Yes, with a cloud model: your prompt, including the text of any file the agent reads, goes to that provider. No, with a model running locally on your PC: nothing leaves the machine. Keys stay local. Chats, working folders and API keys stay on the PC, and secrets in tool output are redacted before they reach the model.

Does Plan only mode run any commands?

No. Plan only writes a plan and runs nothing, so there are no commands and no file changes at all while that mode is active. You switch to Ask first or Auto-run to carry the plan out. Plans survive restarts, which helps when you want to read a long plan the next day.
